Specimen 0004 · Dinky Toys (1966–1979)
Dinky Toys No. 106 Thunderbird 2 (1974, larger)
An entirely new, larger Thunderbird 2 in powder blue with different packaging, sold until the late 1970s.
About this item
In 1974 Dinky released a completely redesigned Thunderbird 2 “at a larger scale, and resprayed in a stronger powder blue with different packaging” — an entirely separate toy from the 101, which stayed on shelves until the late 1970s (official Gerry Anderson blog). The Science Museum Group holds a Dinky Thunderbird 2 dated about 1978, made at Binns Road, Liverpool.
How to identify it
- No. 106 was used twice. Dinky also used 106 for the Mini Moke taxi from The Prisoner (1967–70), so search and check by name, not just number.
- Compare size: the 106 is the larger of Dinky’s two Thunderbird 2 castings.
